The number of pharmacists in Portugal has increased steadily in the last
15 years (Fig. 4.5). However, in 2013 Portugal still had a low ratio of pharmacists
(77 per 100 000 population) compared with Spain (112/100 000) or the United
Kingdom (80/100 000). According to the Pharmacists’ Association, in 2014 there
were 14 668 active pharmacists in Portugal, of which 59% worked in community
pharmacies, 9% worked at hospital pharmacies, 6% in clinical analyses and 5%
in pharmaceutical industry (Portuguese Pharmacists’ Association, 2016).
